The architects of the new elementary school in Neubiberg near Munich focused on the best-possible use of daylight and a distinctive design. Drives from elero ensure an optimum light yield in classrooms.

Pößneck, May 2009 – The new building in Neubiberg, Bavaria, that accommodates the town’s new elementary school has a futuristic look about it. Above all, the large glass façades of the elementary school immediately catch the eye and lend the building a transparent character. With its large-format vertical slats the upper storey clearly stands out from the rest of the building – and almost appears to hover in the air. The slats with their hues of red and orange virtually encompass the upper storey in full.

Sufficient daylight creates a pleasant working atmosphere

The partner for the installation of the dynamic building shell was the company Colt International. At the focus of the building concept for the architects and project planners was the well-being of the pupils and teachers. The fundamental principle: Successful learning and sufficient daylight go hand in hand. This is why they decided in favor of a construction with movable slats that allow sufficient light into the rooms and thus create a pleasant and healthy working atmosphere. So as to ensure optimum illumination in the classrooms whatever the time of day the slats on the southern, western and eastern sides of the building track the sun; on the northern side they are permanently fixed in position. In summer the flexible façade thus prevents the rooms from becoming too warm. In autumn and winter, when the sun is particularly low, bothersome glare and dazzle are virtually excluded.

Picolo XL moves slats

The drives that reliably and precisely move the sun protection come from Thuringia: The company elero Linearantriebstechnik in Pößneck manufactures electric linear push-rod actuators. The most important advantages of these drives: They move sun protection elements right down to the millimeter and are insensitive to cold, heat and dust at the same time. With the Neubiberg project the drive of choice was the Picolo XL. With its slender design using weather-resistant stainless steel the compact drive is particularly suitable for use in sophisticated façade architecture. With a force of 1,200 newtons it moves photovoltaic elements and large-format slats, at the same time blending in inconspicuously with the design of the building. In Neubiberg the drives of weather-proof stainless steel were mounted diagonally on the upper edge of the sun protection elements – thus they cannot be seen when the school is viewed from the outside.

The slats are controlled using a central bus system. This means the façade as a whole may be moved or it may be angled in individual areas in line with the respective position of the sun. In order to attain the optimum light yield in the classrooms, teachers and pupils can align the slats in virtually all the rooms individually so as to adjust the light requirements to the respective learning situation.
